At a glance
Steel Plate Weight Calculator estimates the weight of a steel, stainless or aluminum plate from its length, width and thickness, in kg or lb, per piece and per square metre.
- Runs in your browser with no installation and no sign-up.
- Weight = length × width × thickness × density, with all dimensions in the same units.
- Steel at 7.85 g/cm³ weighs 7.85 kg/m² for every 1 mm of thickness.
- Results are estimates based on nominal dimensions and the density you choose.
- A 1/4 in steel plate weighs 10.21 lb per square foot.
- Results and files can be used in commercial work, with no attribution needed.

How to use the Steel Plate Weight Calculator
- Check the unit switch at the top of the tool. Choose Metric (mm) or Imperial (in).
- Confirm that the shape is set to Plate / sheet.
- Pick the material from the list, such as mild/carbon steel (7.85 g/cm³), stainless 304 or 316, or Custom density for any other material.
- Type the width and thickness in mm or inches. If you only know the gauge, look it up on the gauge chart first.
- Type the length of one piece. A plate’s length is entered in mm or inches, the same as its width.
- Enter the Number of pieces.
- Optional: open More options and enter a price per kg or per lb to get the material cost.
- Read the results: weight of one piece, total weight, weight per area (kg/m² or lb/ft²), cross-section area, volume, density used and cost if you entered a price. The sketch and calculation steps show how the number was reached.
When the result is ready, Print / save result prints the inputs, results, calculation steps and date. Choose Save as PDF in your browser’s print window to keep a PDF copy. Copy link reopens the page with the same inputs, which is useful for sending a calculation to a colleague. Reset clears the form.
How to calculate the weight of a steel plate
Multiply the plate’s length, width, thickness and density. For a plate, weight = length × width × thickness × density, and all dimensions must be in the same units before you multiply.
Steel at 7.85 g/cm³ (7,850 kg/m³) gives a simple rule: every 1 mm of thickness weighs 7.85 kg per square metre. A 2000 × 1000 × 10 mm plate has an area of 2 m², and 10 mm of steel weighs 78.5 kg/m², so the plate weighs 157.0 kg. The same plate in stainless 304 (8.00) weighs 160.0 kg, and in aluminum 6061 (2.70) a 1220 × 2440 × 3 mm sheet weighs 24.1 kg.
Density is the only thing that changes between materials. Use the density for your actual grade, because a 1% change in density gives a 1% change in weight.
How much does 1/4 steel plate weigh per square foot
A 1/4 in steel plate weighs 10.21 lb per square foot. Steel weighs 40.8 lb per ft² for every 1 in of thickness, and 1/4 in is 0.25 of that.
In metric, 1/4 in is 6.35 mm, so the plate weighs about 49.8 kg per square metre. This is the same 7.85 kg/m² per mm rule applied to 6.35 mm.
To get the weight of a whole plate, multiply the weight per square foot by the plate’s area in square feet. Enter the dimensions in the tool to get the total with the calculation steps shown.
Steel plate weight chart
When calculating weight of steel plate by hand, the weight per area is the quickest route: multiply it by the plate area. Values for mild steel at 7.85 g/cm³:
| Thickness | kg/m² | Thickness | lb/ft² | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 mm | 23.55 | 1/8 in | 5.10 | |
| 5 mm | 39.25 | 3/16 in | 7.66 | |
| 6 mm | 47.10 | 1/4 in | 10.21 | |
| 8 mm | 62.80 | 3/8 in | 15.31 | |
| 10 mm | 78.50 | 1/2 in | 20.42 | |
| 12 mm | 94.20 | 3/4 in | 30.63 | |
| 20 mm | 157.00 | 1 in | 40.84 |
For stainless 304 multiply by about 1.02 (8.00 ÷ 7.85); for aluminum 6061 by about 0.344 (2.70 ÷ 7.85).
Plate is often bought by the sheet: a 4 × 8 ft sheet is 32 ft², so multiply the lb/ft² value above by 32 (1/4 in plate: 32 × 10.21 = 326.7 lb). A 1.25 × 2.5 m metric sheet is 3.125 m², so 10 mm steel at that size weighs 3.125 × 78.5 = 245.3 kg.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a 4x8 sheet of steel weigh?
A 4 × 8 ft steel sheet that is 1/4 in thick weighs 326.7 lb, which is 48 × 96 in at 10.21 lb/ft². Halving the thickness to 1/8 in gives about 163 lb.
Can I use the steel plate weight calculator for stainless steel plate?
Yes. Choose stainless 304 or stainless 316 (both 8.00 g/cm³) from the material list. A 2000 × 1000 × 10 mm stainless 304 plate weighs 160.0 kg.
How do I calculate plate weight for aluminum?
Select aluminum 6061 (2.70), aluminum 5052 (2.68) or aluminum 7075 (2.81). A 1220 × 2440 × 3 mm aluminum 6061 sheet weighs 24.1 kg, about one third of the same steel sheet.
What if I only know the gauge number of my sheet?
Look up the thickness on the sheet metal gauge chart, then enter that thickness in mm or inches. For example, 16 gauge steel is 0.0598 in, or 1.519 mm.
How accurate is the result?
The result is an estimate based on nominal dimensions and the density you choose. Check critical designs against the applicable standard and your supplier’s data before you order or lift a load.
Can I use the results in quotes or products I sell?
Yes. Results and files can be used in commercial work, including quotes, client jobs and products you sell. No attribution is needed. The only limit is copying the site itself as a competing service.
